![]() Mark your calendars for Saturday, June 13 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. (or later, depending on questions) for the second program on easy-to-grow, nutritious vegetables in your home garden or containers. The program will be held in the Spruce Room, Shold Building at WSU, 201 W. Patison, Port Hadlock. The program is presented free as a community service and is open to master gardeners and the public.
Chris Smith, an expert on growing vegetables, will again guide master gardeners and members of the public on how to successfully grow vegetables. This time Chris' focus will be cool weather gardening for growing fall and winter produce. He will discuss planting in raised beds and containers and identifying the proper location for the vegetables you want to plant. Proper fertilizing, how to overcome problems, and which vegetables will grow best in fall and winter in our area will also be part of Chris' presentation. Chris worked for 26 years for WSU Cooperative Extension, 22 of them in Kitsap County. He has written The Sound Gardener column for the Kitsap Sun for the past 25 years and the Good Enough To Eat column for the Seattle P-I for the last 10 years before the newspaper stopped publishing. Chris helped found the Kitsap Regional Farmers' Market in 1977. He served as a Peace Corps Volunteer (1964-66) and Associate Director (1968-70) in Turkey. A lifelong vegetable gardener, Chris is married and has two children and five grandchildren. |
