Jefferson County-specific Volunteer Expectations
Interns: After completing the WSU Master Gardener Basic Training course, Trainees become Master Gardener Interns, with a commitment to complete at least 100 hours of volunteer service within the next two years, 50 hours per year. Of these 100 hours, at least 18 are to be served at Plant Clinic, 9 hours per year.
Veteran Master Gardeners: After completion of the Intern commitment, Interns become Veteran Master Gardeners. To maintain your status as a Master Gardener, you must reapply annually to WSU Extension and sign a WSU Pesticide Agreement (See Attachments), and you must complete at least 25 hours of regular time and 10 hours of continuing education time. Veteran Master Gardeners are not required to volunteer for Plant Clinic; however, as an experimental incentive in 2008, Plant Clinic hours count double at Port Hadlock and triple at Brinnon and Quilcene.
Friends of Master Gardeners, Emeritus and Alumni Master Gardeners are categories of participation which may be available to those who cannot fulfill the requirements to remain certified as active Veteran Master Gardeners.
Review Volunteer Opportunities with WSU Master Gardeners Through the JCMGF for all activities currently conducted by Jefferson County Master Gardeners. Activity leaders, workers and participants all receive credit for their hours (rounding to the quarter-hour), including time preparing for and attending the activity, and time traveling to and from the activity. Volunteer hours are to be reported quarterly to the Membership Coordinator, breaking out which hours are for travel, education, plant clinic and “regular” volunteering.
Credit for Non-Master Gardener Activities. Interns are strongly encouraged to participate in the activities of the Jefferson County Master Gardeners Foundation during their internship. Notwithstanding, Interns and Veteran Master Gardeners should be credited for volunteer hours when they participate in activities, other than those conducted by the Jefferson County Master Gardeners, which educate the community about sustainable gardening practices and further the goals of the Jefferson County Master Gardeners.
We believe that Master Gardeners will report these hours responsibly and that they are the best arbiters of the appropriateness of these activities. Master Gardener volunteer hours should not be claimed for activities for which the Master Gardener receives compensation, or which serve only the individual member, their families, and/or their friends. Examples might include:
- Attendance at a garden club meeting would not qualify for hours. If, however, the Master Gardener presented a brief educational talk for the garden club, that time could be counted.
- Working in an individual or community garden would not qualify for hours. If, however, the Master Gardener led public tours in the community garden, gave a workshop for the public about how to create a community garden, or spoke to community groups about particular gardening practices as viewed in the community garden, that time could be counted.
Similar guidelines apply to educational hours.
- Attendance at a community lecture presented by an authority on a horticultural, agricultural, or environmental topic would qualify for educational hours.
- Guided tours of public or private gardens or native plant settings with a focus on education would also qualify.
- Reading a book, watching a television program, or visiting a park would not qualify.
Membership in the Jefferson County Master Gardener Foundation.
While all Master Gardeners are eligible and encouraged to join the JCMGF, there is no requirement to join. You may be a WSU Master Gardener and participate in WSU Master Gardener activities, conducted under the auspices of the JCMGF, without being a member of the JCMGF. Only Master Gardener members of the JCMGF may, however, hold JCMGF office or vote on JCMGF issues.
Members in the JCMGF are asked to submit an annual renewal membership application (See Attachments) to confirm their continuing wish to participate, to update their contact information, and to indicate their intentions for volunteer participation in the coming year.
